16 uncommon travel tips
Just a misc. set of travel tips which may not be commonly known but I've discovered can be useful in my travels. I've left out anything obvious (eg. bring sunscreen) and they're fairly general so depending on your circumstance and country of destination, they may or may not be applicable. But yeah, might be ideas to consider before a trip.
- Memorize your passport number. You're going to need it many many times. Saves time having to take it out of your money belt.
- Don't bother getting your passport photos done at the post office or wherever. use www.Idphoto4u.com to create photos with all the right dimensions and then go print it out at Target for about 15 cents.
- Bring some passport photos with you. You might need it to get into some attractions.
- Never get into a taxi with no meter without negotiating a price. You're pretty much writing the driver a blank cheque.
- Use dropbox to automatically backup your photos onto the cloud whilst you travel.
- Hide money in multiple places (eg. wallet, money belt, day pack, luggage) so that you could only be totally stranded if you lost everything you had. (Try not to forget where they are either, especially when leaving a country as some currency is worthless outside of the country)
- Bank fees get expensive so do your homework before you leave home. Look at their fees but also look at their exchange rate - make sure it's the visa official rate of the day. All of those prepaid travel cards (eg. Travelex) are basically crap cause you prefill at a very bad exchange rate. You can end up paying like 5-6% more using them.
- Get pants with pockets that can be buttoned or zipped up (or stitch velcro strips) to prevent getting pick pocketed.
- Get an offline GPS app for your phone. A good one is CityMaps2Go for Android.
- If you're flying an el cheapo airline that insists on weighing your hand luggage and you know you're over - let them weigh it at the checkin counter. Then you can just put more stuff in before you go though security.
- Bring a GPS watch / pedometer which can capture your movements. You'll be pleasantly surprised just how much walking you end up doing daily.
- Buying an open jaw ticket (where you fly in and fly out of two different cities) can be a great way to prevent having to "backtrack" through places you've already visited
- Always take a card from the place you're staying. No matter what happens, you can always hand it to a taxi driver to get home.
- Bring a few bottles of those waterless hand sanitizer as you may not always find a convenient bathroom to wash your hands
- On the topic of bathrooms, always keep some toilet paper and imodium in your day pack (...cause when you need them, you're going to need them)
- Look into getting your vaccinations in the destination country. Countries like Thailand have good medical facilities and vaccinations may be much cheaper there and just as good.
Agree or disagree with any of the above? Has any of them gotten you out of a jam recently? Got any new tips that's definitely worth a mention? Let me know in the comments below.
